Welcome Lending Library: Freedom to Read

Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities is a community leader in providing programs and events supporting literacy. The James Boyd Book Club, Kids Book Clubs, the NC Literary Hall of Fame, and Writers in Residence program are examples of our commitment. Our Literary Committee actively supports the NC Poetry Society and the annual Moore County Writers’ Competition.

Weymouth participates in various workshops and webinars supported by the American Library Association (ALA) with a focus on encouraging personal choice in the preservation of the freedom to read. On March 23, 2024, in collaboration with “National Reading Month” we are introducing our Welcome Lending Library for community residents who may wish to donate books and also choose a book, take it home, read, and then return it.

In addition, we are announcing our participation in the Little Free Library Organization with our own Little Free Library on the grounds of the Boyd House. It is located just to the right of the front door and will serve the many visitors to the grounds who may want to grab a book and find a quiet spot to read.

Our mission in establishing the library is intended to support current readers and to pass a love of reading to the next generation while trusting borrowers to make their own decisions about what you and your family read and believe.

Categories will include:

● Books for children and young adults

● Writers-in-Residence authors

● North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame (NCLHOF) Award Recipients

● Books that are considered controversial or challenged.

E-mail archives@weymouthcenter.org to provide a list of books you would like to donate. This will limit accepting books that we have in our library or do not meet our criteria. The library will be located in James Boyd’s original “study” just inside the main entrance and on the staircase bookshelves.

Thanks to the Friends of Weymouth and the Women of Weymouth for their in-kind donations that are providing the books for our collection inventory. Thanks also to the generosity of Weymouth Board member Glenda Kirby, we are also excited to provide a free standing book exchange receptacle for children and young adults who can drop off or take a book for their libraries. It is located outside to the right of the Center for easy access. Tell your friends!
