Celebrate National Poetry Month

Weymouth Center is pleased to present ExperieNCe Poetry!

ExperieNCe Poetry is our month-long celebration of poetry in both its written and spoken form. Join the celebration by engaging with us on Instagram and Facebook as we share 30 days of poems. Join us in person at Weymouth by attending any or all of our events that showcase a cross-section of poets, including NC Poet Laureates, and local talent.

This special initiative is made possible by Weymouth Board Members Marilyn Barrett, Andie Rose, and Pat Riviere-Seel. Pat Riviere-Seel is the liaison to the NC Writers Network for Weymouth's partnership in the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame and a published poet.

“A big part of [what makes Weymouth unique] is being in this house and being surrounded by the spirits of so many writers that have gone before me,” said Pat Riviere-Seel, Writer-in-Residence and Friends of Weymouth board member. "I look around this room and I see a number of people, still living, and some that are gone that have had an influence on me as a writer.”

Surrounded by generations of fellow North Carolinian writers’ portraits, Pat Riviere-Seel sits comfortably. She could be in someone’s living room or she could be in a museum - that’s the unique charm of the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, housed in the Boyd House.

The Writers-in-Residence program honors the Boyds’ tradition of hosting writers, and is just part of the reason why Pat calls Weymouth Center, “a statewide literary treasure.”

As a published poet, Pat is no stranger to Writers-in-Residence programs, having even been a poet-in-residence at the North Carolina Zoo in 2012. Despite calling a zoo home, Pat says that Weymouth Center’s program for resident writers is one of the most unique.

“I know of no other house in North Carolina that belonged to a North Carolina writer that has continued to welcome North Carolina writers,” said Pat, “much as James Boyd did during his lifetime.”

In 2021, Pat’s relationship with Weymouth Center grew from supporter and Writers-in-Residence to include a member of the Friends of Weymouth Board in which she acts as Weymouth's liaison to the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. As former president of the North Carolina Poetry Society (2005 - 2007) and a creator of the Susan Laughter Myers Fellowship in Poetry, Pat being honored with the duties of liaison was a natural fit.

“I met a lot of wonderful writers over the six years that I was chair,” said former Chair of Weymouth Center Writers-in-Residence Program, Katrina Denza, “But Pat was a standout for the role of liaison for both her talent and her advocacy for Weymouth.”

Two of Pat’s prominent goals as a board member have been to strengthen Weymouth’s ties with the North Carolina Poetry Society and enhance the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame that she lovingly calls North Carolina’s “best-kept secret.” Cohorts believe she’s well-suited for these goals.

“[Pat] is a well-respected leader within the state at large,” said former Friends of Weymouth President, Kathryn Talton, “and her advocacy [makes] a significant impact.”

But Pat doesn’t do it for the praise. She does it for the community.
