Thank you for entering the 2025 Moore County Writers’ Competition
Since 1986, Weymouth has hosted the Annual Moore County Writers’ Competition. Supported by the Donald and Elizabeth Cooke Foundation and The Mebane Foundation. The competition seeks to promote writing throughout Moore County and honor the work that goes into creating superior writing.
2025 COMPETITION GUIDELINES
SUBMIT YOUR BEST FICTION, NONFICTION, OR POETRY WORKS BY FEBRUARY 28, 2025.
Awards reception for grades 1-12: Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 2:00PM
Adult reception: Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at 6:00PM at Weymouth Center, 555 E. Connecticut Avenue in Southern Pines. Each winner will have an opportunity to read a portion of their entry, so please come prepared.
The competition is open to all students and residents of Moore County, NC
Entry Categories:
- Poetry—60 lines maximum
- Fiction—3,000 words maximum
- Nonfiction—3,000 words maximum
Age Groups:
- Elementary (Grades 1-3 and 4-6)
- Middle School (Grades 7-9)
- High School (Grades 10-12)
- Adult
Cash prizes are awarded to first, second, and third place winners; honorable mentions receive a certificate.
The following awards will be presented for each age group within each entry category: First Place $100, Second Place $50, Third Place $25.
Winners will be contacted via email.
Writing Contest Guidelines (Updated for 2025):
- Your entry must be your own original work.
- Entries must not use artificial intelligence as a part of their creation.
- Please do not enter previously published materials.
- Only one entry per contestant per category will be allowed.
- There is a 3,000 word count limit for all submissions.
- Please use 12 pt. type with no other graphics or illustrations.
- There is no Cover Page! Please include all requested entry information in the body copy of your email and attach your submission to the email. The title of your Submission should be the title of the attachment without any other identifying information.
- Your email body copy should contain the following information: Name, Title of Entry, Word Count, Phone number, E-mail address, Category, and Age Group. If you are a student, please include the name of your school and teacher. The subject of your email should be “MCWC, author’s name, Title of work”
- All digital submissions must be shared via Google Documents Only and submitted to MCWC@weymouthcenter.org by February 28, 2025. No PDF’s will be accepted.
- Entries received after the deadline will not be accepted. Deadline for entries: 5:00 p.m. on February 28, 2025.
- All mail-in/walk-in entries must be typewritten, at least 14-point font, double-spaced with numbered pages, and include a cover page with a title and the author’s name.
- If your entry is in Braille, an additional translated Google Document will be required.
- If your entry is in an audio format, please include a transcript as a Google Document.
